1. What is Powder Coating?
a. Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as "whiteware", aluminum extrusions, automobile and motorcycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fiberboard); to be powder coated using different methods.

2. Advantages of SunDial Powder Coating?

a. The advantages of powder coating over liquid finishes include:
1. Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC).
2. Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.
3. Powder coating overspray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating.
4. Powder coating production lines produce less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings.
ii. A wide range of specialty effects is easily accomplished which would be impossible to achieve with other coating processes.
iii. A beautiful and uniform quality finish without paint runs.
iv. Cost-effective, even on small batches or single items.
v. Quick turnaround times.
vi. The electrostatic powder process ensures complete coverage, even on complex shapes and tight corners.
vii. Choice of finishes - clear, plain color, metallic or textured.
viii. Protection against external ultra-violet fading.
ix. Corrosion resistance.

3. How smooth and consistent is a powder coated finish?

a. One of the many advantages of powder coatings over liquid coatings is the consistent nature of the final finish. Due to the application methods of powder coatings you never have to worry about drips, sags, runs or light spots that can occur with wet paint.

4. What does Sandblasting do for my parts?
a. Sandblasting is a generic term for the process of cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speeds; the effect is similar to that of using sandpaper, but provides a more even finish with no problems at corners or crannies. Sandblasting ‘etches and cleans’ the surface of the metal which in turn creates a surface profile that increases the performance of the powder coating finish.

5. What if my parts are chrome plated?
a. Typically chrome plating can be tricky to powder coat. Over the last 30 years Sundial has been able to master the process so that you can still powder coat over a chrome plated surface. Please bring in your chrome plated parts to us first before trying to remove the plating as it may not be necessary.

6. Should I do anything to prepare the surface of my parts?
a. Not at all… that’s what you pay us for. We will handle all the steps necessary to make sure that the powder coating will be perfect…. Even if you need a primer coat.

7. What kind of stuff can I powder coat?
a. If it’s metal we can powder coat it. We can also powder coat glass, certain woods (MDF), and high temperature plastics.

8. Will my aluminum rims get affected by the heat?
a. This is Sundial Powder Coatings… we know powder coating. During the last 30 years we have coated thousands of automotive parts including high performance aluminum rims, all without incident. We take the time to fully understand the substrate and its limits.

9. How affordable is Powder Coating?
• Powder coating your patio furniture or office furniture can run you about $200-$300.
• If you used spray paint to refinish the same patio furniture, you’d need to buy about 20 cans at $5 per can. Total: $100. Seems a cheaper method until the paint chips after one season in the sun, rain and cold.
• Powder coating, for $100 or so more, doesn’t last one season. It lasts up to 20 years!
• The result is that powder coating gives your products that just-bought-new-look saving you thousands of dollars in the process.
• It is no wonder that powder coating is the fastest-growing finishing technology in North America.
• It is not money spent…its money saved.

10. Why choose SunDial over the rest?
a. Since the inception SunDial has been a major contributor to the growth of the powder coating industry. When the others were still wiping parts with rags, SunDial installed a power wash system, when others were using sandpaper we had a sandblaster. SunDial also works closely with its suppliers to create more effective chemicals and materials. Also SunDial created the only software designed for the powder coating industry used by other powder coaters. Our business has grown by keeping to the basics, honest work at an honest price and service service service.
